Administrative Control Google Desktop 3 for Enterprise
After 3 beta were released last week, there are so many discussions and complain to not install this product because of its new feature. Google Desktop indicated that "This feature stores your indexed files on Google Desktop servers for copying to your other computers". That’s why Matthew Glotzbach posted to counter this problem.
In other words, it works like what we guessed. Files would be sent to Google and then other machines of your choice. If you don’t like this feature, just turn it off. This feature is may not suitable for home users but it is very useful and powerful for enterprise users. Manager can search for a file located in one of thousand desktops in just a click. Most of all, this search results are well integrated into usual Google search results. So, if you are enterprise and looking for this kind of advantage over your competitors, install instead of just non-enterprise version. On enterprise edition, you are allowed to control behaviors of each Google Desktop instance through standard group policy. As a result, you can disable sending files from some machines, e.g., manager and financial departments. So manager can still search for financial documents but developer can’t.
Happy Googling!
