Google loves text and now graphics
If you are IM addicted, you might find emoticons is a cool thing on this earth. Anyway, I don’t like emoticons at all because it always changes my code into funny and unreadable text. In Google Talk, emoticons are not available! I guess that the main reason is that all Windows components produced by Google is now relying on text-based widget. If you notice on the Google Sidebar, you will only see text, list of text and similar text fields. Google Talk is another good example. Its user interface is very look like . In other words, they seems to be a kind of HTML with AJAX. That’s why I say Google loves text in the title.
As of last Valentine day, Google is one of the most exciting company which actively improves their product based on requirement. I think that emoticons might be a feature that Googlers want to see on Valentine day. That’s the point. team then to Google Talk. Unfortunately, Google Talk seems to completely rely on text-based widgets. It is very difficult to implement emoticons in a short period and this feature will not be as impressive as it could on Valentine day. So they started to implement this feature in Gmail’s built-in chat window which is fully AJAX and HTML. In particular, emoticons are just to substitute pre-defined text with img element.
