Review: Google Page Creator

My Gmail account has been enabled to sign in to  on last Friday. As I , Google Page Creator was offered to everyone from novice to expert to construct homepage easy than ever. After creating my first page at , I found something different from just other wysiwyg editors such as TinyMCE and FCKeditor.

  • Google Page Creator is very similar to Microsoft Publisher and Dreamweaver MX with template. It offers you to change layout (template) and look (theme).
  • Each layout has only 5 editable regions such as title, subtitle, content, sidebar, and footer.
  • Changing layout and look will never effect to your contents.
  • It is much more simpler than TinyMCE and FCKeditor.
  • There are only 9 buttons such as image, link, bold, italic, font face, font size, and alignment.
  • No popups. All popups are floating div. They are ajaxified.
  • Inserting a link may lead to create new page or upload your file.
  • Inserting an image may also lead to upload your image.
  • You are able to change any links and images without touching the HTML source.
  • My account has 100 MB quota.

By the way, Google Page Creator is just for static page and not suitable for web designers who want to adjust CSS and HTML in advanced mode. In addition, there are only 4 layouts: one column, two column with a sidebar on the left, two column with a sidebar on the right, and 3 columns. If Google would like to let people to create product catalog or photo album, they have to add more layouts. Anyway, it is just beta. Don’t expect too much from beta software.

I haven't used it yet but after reading your review, I think the concept is quite close to Apple iWeb. Only different is traditional application vs web application. My equation: Google Page Creator = iWeb + site space hosting integration (in this case, mac.com) - Podcast - Photo gallery from iPhoto
