BitTorrent Client: The Big Three and their consortium

As of today, everyone knows what BitTorrent is with no doubt. To download/upload via BitTorrent, you need a kind of BitTorrent client. Lots of BitTorrent client has been developed during two years ago. BTQueue is one of them. Anyway, it seems The Big Three are sharing the biggest part of BitTorrent client in the wild.

  1. uTorrent 1.5
  2. BitComet 0.63
  3. Azureus 2.4.0.0

These big three are the de facto standard for the rest BitTorrent client including BTQueue by the way. You might know that there are some incompatibility in these three clients, especially DHT and end-to-end encryption. However, I think that all authors are planning to joint development of drafting new specification for the next generation protocol. End-to-End encryption is one of the most requested features to help leechers behide bandwidth shaper working on 7th layer. uTorrent and Azureus used the same encryption while BitComet is totally different. Now, BitComet 0.63 is compatible to uTorrent and Azureus. Below is my conclusion about the Big Three.

  1. Size does matter. uTorrent is very popular right now. It seems to be the smallest BitTorrent client.
  2. The Big Three will form a kind of BitTorrent consortium to standardize the BTng in near feature.
  3. Bandwidth shaper will be improved to support stateful analysis and L7 encryption.
  4. BitTorrent’s technique will be applied to other applications.

Well, it would be nice if uTorrent is an open-source project.
