From Gmail Drive to Gmail File Space

Gmail has changed free e-mail services on the net. Size does matter. It started to offer 1 GB space for an account with no cost while other services only offers at most 100 MB for free. In addition, Gmail is extremely fast comparing to its competitors Yahoo! Mail and Hotmail. Since it offered 1 GB space, many innovative programmers tried to hack to use this space as a drive to upload/download/share files easily.

Gmail Drive is the first solution. It relies on shell extension of Windows Explorer to map your Gmail account as a drive on Windows platform. Yes, Gmail Drive is only available for Windows only. I have never used Gmail Drive because I don’t want to install any programs that may harm my OS. Today, I found another solution.

Gmail File Space has the same principle as Gmail Drive. Anyway, it doesn’t rely on any operating system because it runs on Firefox. Of course, its user interface is XUL. Cool! That means your OS is safe. Nothing modified. Gmail File Space works just like an FTP client.

By the way, Gmail offers only about 3 GB free space so it might be not enough for large scale file sharing. It would be better to have Gmail File Space running on top of .
