Trying Emacs 23 on Ubuntu Edgy Eft
There are 2 editors in this world I would like to try. The first one is Vi which is my favorite editor for years. The second one is Emacs which many people suggest me to try for getting another experiences. I have tried Emacs many times with no luck. I was unable to use it as I wish. Even getting out was not easy for me. Now the time has come for my next chance. This time, I have advisors and supervisors to help me get through this trouble startup to change my life. Don't worry, Vi is still my first choice on remote connection via ssh. Thanks to all expertists at Codenone.
Actually, Emacs 23 is not officially released yet. I'm talking about its snapshot which is going to be Emacs 23 sooner or later. First of all, I have to install it on my Edgy box. Fortunately, I found The Consciousness Repository which provides mostly up-to-date deb packages for Edgy so I don't have to waste my time to compile this feature-rich editor. The repositories are as follow.
deb http://debs.peadrop.com edgy backports
deb-src http://debs.peadrop.com edgy backports
Don't forget to add GPG key.
wget http://debs.peadrop.com/DD385D79.gpg -O- | sudo apt-key add -
Now, install it. For me, it took about 23.7 MB.
sudo apt-get install emacs-snapshot-gtk
Hooray! I now have a beautiful editor called Emacs. It comes with Xft. For Thai keyboard, it is possible to switch between keyboard by ctrl-\
. At the first time, I have to specify input method as thai-kesmanee
. Then change font by menu Options -> Set Font/Fontset -> misc -> 7x13. It works perfectly and Thai support are much better than Vim 7.
